I finally figured out how to make the pictures upload to my Flickr, so I have some catching up to do with blogging. This post will consist of a few pictures I took on Wednesday (May 28th) in Union Square and Williamsburg.

I took this picture in Union Square. I was standing close to the people pictured, but not close enough so I could really hear what they were talking about. Even though I don’t know what was actually being said, this picture makes it obvious that there is definitely an interaction going on between the three of them. I like the photo in black and white even more than the photo in color. The contrast is nice!

I took this picture on a subway ride from Union Square to Brooklyn, which is why the train is outside. The train I was on was extremely crowded so everyone was forced to squish together. I noticed these three people because each of them had a different expression on his or her face from the others; the man looks exhausted, the woman in the glasses looks thoughtful, and the woman by the window is leisurely going through her magazine. I found it amusing that they (and New Yorkers generally like their personal space.. and are able to pass by hundreds of people a day without acknowledging them) were forced to sit so close to each other, and be so aware of each other. I tried to lighten up the photo a bit so you could see more of each of their faces/expressions, but it made the photo a little grainy.. I’m going to work more on that later.

I took this is Union Square. I immediately noticed the repeated geometric shape of the stairs themselves as well as the repetition of the shadow and thought it would make a cool picture. The stairs were so dark to begin with that turning the picture black and white and upping the contrast a little made the picture even better, I think!

I took this is Union Square also! I was at the bottom of the steps up from the subway and looked up to take this picture. I love the movement in it- it really shows how fast New Yorkers are going at all times. The directional line of the railing from the very bottom of the picture fading into the blank/white top portion of the picture leads your eye all the way in and then leaves you wondering where all those people were headed.

This picture was taken in Williamsburg! The subject is cut off so you can’t see his entire body, and I like it that way. Similar to the first picture I posted, you know something is going on but you don’t know exactly what. His hand position definitely suggests that he’s thinking about something (and I can pretty much assume this, because he stood on that corner for about 5 minutes before actually crossing, and there wasn’t any traffic!). The three shadows balance each other out and the manhole covers add something to the plain asphalt.

I also took this one in Williamsburg. I just like this picture for some reason. Maybe because I love to read? I’m not totally sure to be honest!

I think the photograph of the stairs is really interesting the way it is framed make it looks like something geometric and even in a mathematical way. The shadow that falls in the right side accomplishes a game of contrast.
